Keeping your cheer shoes bright and sparkling-white can be a bit of a hassle but it's necessary to, well... put your best foot forward! And that goes for black competition shoes too, many feature white soles or logos that can accumulate dirt and grime. If you take care of your shoes the right way, they'll last longer and keep your knees, ankles, and feet safe from injury. Not to mention, if you're a flyer there's less chance that junk from the street will come off of your shoes and fall in the bases’ eyes (Ouch!).
First, proper care:
Cheerleading shoes aren't like regular sneakers. Cheer shoes are specially made to be lightweight so you get the best bounce and they won't slow you down when tumbling. They're not made to stand up to the friction caused by walking on rough surfaces like gravel and pavement. And they need a little extra special care in order to maintain their white color without causing damage to the fabrics or adhesive holding them together. (And
NO
, we don't recommend just tossing them in the washer and dryer. Seriously, please don't.)
The best defense is a good offense and that goes for your cheer shoes too! Getting them back to their original, out of the box state once they’re dirty is nearly impossible so here are a few tips to keep your cheer shoes in great shape in the first place.
Only wear your cheer shoes for practice or performances – your shoes will last longer if you limit the amount of time you wear them. Throw on a pair of slides or your regular shoes before and right after practice.
When you're not wearing your cheer shoes, make sure you store them correctly sitting upright so they don't get squished. This can ruin the shape of the shoe and make them more prone to rips between the soles and uppers.
Pack your shoes in a
cheer bag
with a shoe compartment to prevent transferring stains and smells to and from your workout wear or uniform.
Cleaning your shoes:
Dirt happens. Even when you do everything right, stains and marks get on your shoes.
Many people recommend
bleach
to maintain that fresh out of the box look, but Superior Cheer disagrees. Especially if your squad wears black shoes!
On white shoes, bleach tends to yellow over time while on black shoes, the risk of discoloring the fabric is too great. Our pros recommend a good degreaser such as Mean Green, Simple Green, or 409. But remember to start slow, and go easy on the chemicals.
Here's what you'll need:
An old towel
An old Toothbrush
Toothpaste
Water
Degreaser (like Mean Green, Simple Green, or 409)
A clean, white cloth
Rubber Gloves (optional)
Prepare your space.
Lay down a clean towel or work on a surface that you don't mind getting wet or dirty. If you have sensitive skin, it may be helpful to put on some rubber gloves.
Grab your toothbrush.
Oddly enough, toothpaste is great for dealing with surface dirty (it's also good for cleaning silver jewelry too!). Wet your toothbrush and add about as much toothpaste as you would when brushing your teeth.
Brush, brush, brush.
Put your hand inside the shoe to hold the shape and gently brush the dirty areas in a circular motion, working a little at a time. If you're cleaning the sole of your shoe, you can scrub a little harder.
Wipe.
As you finish each section, wipe the area with a clean, damp cloth to remove the dirt and toothpaste.
And repeat.
For tougher spots, you may need to go at it twice. Then wipe the entire shoe one more time to make sure there's no residue left. Repeat the steps with the other sneaker.
Degreaser.
If that didn't work, then it's time to bring out the big guns. Degreaser works really well on scuffs and marks caused by shoes rubbing together while tumbling and stunting. Just spray a little on the area and scrub the marks with your cloth or toothbrush – again cleaning in small sections in circular motions, wiping clean each time. Don't leave the toothpaste or degreaser on for too long.
Air it out.
Give your shoes one more wipe down with your damp cloth, then let your freshly cleaned shoes air-dry in front of a fan. This will get them dry fast without the risk of fading black competition shoes or drying out the rubber decreasing the life of them quickly.
Don't forget your laces!
You can clean surface dirt off of your laces using the techniques mentioned above, give them a rinse in warm war, and then let them air-dry... or just buy some fresh laces.
That's it!
While you're cleaning your shoes, remember to look them over. If the bottom of your shoe is starting to separate from the upper, don't try to glue it. This cosmetic fix is only temporary, stunting or tumbling in cheer in shoes that are coming apart can cause injury or they could fall apart during a performance. If your shoes are starting to show signs of extreme wear, it may be
time to replace them
.

Whether you're camping for a day or overnight, be sure to CAMP
SMART
with these tips from Superior Cheer!
S
tretch
–
Any workout or exercise should be accompanied by a stretch session before to warm-up your muscles. Stretching before camp can help prevent injuries while stretching after the day’s events are over can lessen soreness the following day.
Superior Cheer Quick Tip: Try a yoga sequence to mix up your stretching routine and challenge yourself!
M
ake Friends
– While camp is a lot of work, it also is a lot of fun with your friends! Be sure to step out from just hanging with your besties and include new cheerleaders who may be a freshman or recently moved to the area. No one wants to feel like the outsider, everyone will enjoy camp to the fullest if everyone feels included!
Superior Cheer Quick Tip: Each meal at camp, try to sit with someone you’ve never met before! Encourage your friends to do the same, and by the end of camp (hopefully), you will have met all of the new faces!
A
sk Questions
– Camp is a time to learn and practice, if you don’t fully understand the instruction, make sure to ask and listen closely! You want to do your best in practice, and that starts with knowing exactly what you are supposed to do.
Superior Cheer Quick Tip: While listening to instruction, act like there is going to be a quiz after (maybe there is!), visually think about what’s being said, so you can repeat it in your head and recall it more quickly when it’s time to practice!
R
ehydrate
– Camp days are usually long and strenuous. Take care of yourself by taking water breaks often. Sports drinks can be a good supplement as well but try to steer away from beverages containing excess sugar or caffeine.
Superior Cheer Quick Tip: Go green by bringing your own reusable water bottle to camp!
T
each
– Remember that camp is supposed to be a fun time to learn! Perfecting any skill takes time and hard work, so if you see a fellow athlete struggling to remember the motions to a chant, offer to run through it together. Practice makes perfect!
Superior Cheer Quick Tip: Never laugh at someone struggling, instead offer advice and encouragement! You never know when roles will be reversed and you are struggling to learn and need a boost from someone on your team.
Have a wonderful summer and a great cheer camp!

WE ARE SUPERIOR
®
Every team has a different point of view when it comes to the “essentials” of cheerleading.
Whether that is having a specific shoe, preferred style of uniform, or standard bow.
However, one item that is up for debate is…BAGS
Duffel bags, backpacks, totes, drawstrings, fanny packs, gear bags, etc (Oh, my!)
With so many different options, you begin to ask questions like,
"which is the best function for my needs?" and "does this fit my style?"
Which bag should I choose?
We know it is a tough question, so here are a few examples of some of our favorites, and why we think they're GREAT:
The adidas Small Issue Duffel $31.95
As a leader in the athletic apparel, anything that has "adidas" on it is guaranteed to be great quality (plus they have a lifetime manufacturer's guarantee, so that's awesome!). This adidas Small Issue Duffel has great pocket options for lots of storage, and if you need something even larger, there is the big-brother to this bag, the adidas Medium Issue Duffel that give you more room to pack.
This bag has the Hydroshell coated material that keeps your gear dry when the elements get sketchy. The shoulder strap is adjustable and removable, and there is even a side haul handle (which is pretty convenient, if you ask us!)

It features a large main compartment with a two-way zipper and bellowed front zippered pocket which is perfect to hold items you need frequently. The League Duffel comes in 11 different colors and has an adjustable/detachable padded shoulder strap and padded handle. The bag stays open because of a removable hard base, remove the base to fold up the bag when it's not in use carrying all of your important gear!
Asics Team Backpack $27.95
One of our best selling backpacks, the Asics Team Backpack comes in 9 team colors and features a large main compartment (which features a laptop sleeve) and a front zipper pocket with organizer and key fob. Side mesh pocket fits a 32 oz. water bottle. Adjustable padded straps give this bag a great fit for anybody. We are not joking about how much this bag can carry, it's hands down a great backpack option!
Team 365 Equipment Backpack $21.95
This unique backpack comes in 16 colors, you are sure to find the right color to match your team with these options! The large front mesh pocket is handy to store items you need to access frequently, and with the elastic at the top of the pocket, the items are secure from falling out accidentally.
An additional mesh side pocket is large enough to hold a bottled water, while the other side has a zippered pocket that is perfect to store your cheer shoes. The large base of this bag helps to keep it upright when it is packed full (which is a huge deal!)
Ripstop Backpack $19.95
Made of a durable denier polyester, this is a great low-cost option for a budget minded cheerleader.
The main zippered compartment is plenty large to hold all of your gear and the smaller front pocket is perfect to keep the smaller items organized and easy to find. Think Pink – October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
In a sport dominated by females, October permeates cheerleading with pink poms, bows, and accessories in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. While these pops of color are fun changes from school uniform, the month itself sits heavy with the seriousness of the disease.
According to the American Cancer Society,
breast cancer is the second most common cancer in American women after skin cancers – one in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life.
So remember the 3.1+ million survivors during October – and THANK YOU for showing them your support!

When it comes to poms, we usually know what we want in color, style, handle type, and material.
But the question that always catches us off - guard is...
“What length of strand would you like?”
Good question. We thought it was worth diving into, so we put together some helpful information below.
3"
Smaller poms typically are better for giveaways,
fundraisers, or just for fun! When it comes to performances though, leave these babies on the sidelines.
4"
These poms are still on the small side of the pom scale, but the 4" strand definitely serves a purpose. This size is great for youth groups who want to pack a punch with a great pom, but not have their little performers overpowered by too much fluff.
5"
The second most common size, the 5” is great for any age group or performance type, but with a slight competitive edge. The marginally shorter strands still provide the necessary flash in appearance, but they act more as an accent to the uniform or group, and less as a show-stealer.
6"
The most common size, the 6” works for just about any age group or performance type. This size can be used for dance teams, pom squads, cheerleaders, majorettes, etc., easily making it the most versatile strand length on the market.
7"
Just on the larger side of the pom scale, the 7" strand length is not quite as popular as it’s two little sisters. Put them to use in a pom dance to really show off those stellar strands.
8"
While it may not seem that much bigger than the 7" (really, it is just an inch?), an 8" strand is on the verge of 'floppy' instead of 'fluffy'. The weight of the added length pushes the strands down and creates a droopy pom.
10"
The mother of all poms, the 10" strand is floppy and not really ideal for any use today. Remember when your mom was a cheerleader? She would have had these long locks, paired with a show or dowel handle, for a perfect vision of retro cheer. And they just get bigger from there, but typically anything longer than 10"
is terribly impractical or used for novelty poms such as rooter poms that you 've seen in the stands of almost every sporting event.
We hope you found these insights on pom sizes helpful! Contact us online at superiorcheer.com 24 / 7
